Brick to Brick
Year 2 were given the amazing opportunity to work with Weston college students who are currently studying bricklaying, civil engineering and carpentry, as part of our topic!
The children partook in 3 workshops over the course of the day, using the materials knowledge that they had learnt as part of our Science work, teamed with their DT skills. The carpentry lecturers challenged the children to join bits of timber together to make the tallest structure that would stand unaided. We explored different bridge structures and built our own in the civil engineering workshop- we even tested the tension in a steel rod until it snapped! Finally, we were allowed free reign of the bricklaying workshop, as we explored different ways of bonding the bricks together to build strong walls. There were definitely a few children who had a flair for slapping on the cement which is a lot trickier than it looks!
Thank you Weston College for such a warm welcome, a memorable, exciting day of learning and for being such lovely hosts!
