British Values at Mead Vale Primary School

In accordance with the Department for Education we aim to actively promote British values in schools to ensure young people leave school prepared for life in modern Britain. Pupils are encouraged to regard people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and tolerance and understand that while different people may hold different views about what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, all people living in England are subject to its law. At Mead Vale Primary School British Values work alongside our School Values and together they run through everything we do within school and beyond.

As our pupils progress through Mead Vale school our curriculum emphasises many aspects of democracy.
The school has an active School Council that represents the voice of the pupils in school. The School Council not only meet with the school leaders, but they organise and lead funding raising events, assemblies and whole school competitions to raise awareness of a wide range of school issues.

We have three school values: Courage, curiosity and community.
To ensure this is realised, school rules are important. Children regularly discuss aspects of behaviour, both within class and when appropriate, with adults across the school. Teachers begin each new year by creating Class Charters. These are formulated with the children and displayed on the wall of the classroom. In this way, every child knows the standard of behaviour that we expect in our school. The school manages behaviour positively; we use a range of rewards, such as praise, dojo points and celebration assemblies to share success. There are sanctions within our behaviour policy to be used where necessary and there are occasions where we personalise a support programme for children in consultation with their key adults and family.

Within school, children are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for all children to make choices safely, through provision of a safe environment and an empowering approach through the education. Children are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and are advised how to exercise these safely, for example through our OPAL Play,  E-Safety and PSHE lessons. Children are further empowered through being part of a School Council. Children are given the freedom to make a wide range of choices from attending extra-curricular clubs to supporting fundraising events.

What do we do?

  • Support children to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence
  • Support children to take risks in their play and know when play is 'safe enough'
  • Encourage pupils to take responsibility for their behaviour, as well as knowing their rights
  • Challenge stereotypes
  • Implement a strong anti-bullying culture

It is a primary aim of our school that every member of the school community feels valued and respected, and that each person is treated fairly and well. Each week we have a ‘Celebration Assembly’ within which we recognise pupils for a number of different reasons. Our children take on a broad range of responsibilities including librarians, school ambassadors, anti-bullying ambassadors and sports leaders.
Our children have many talents that we showcase through a range of performance opportunities. We actively support charitable causes and have raised money for a variety of causes, including local food banks.

At Mead Vale Primary School we educate children from a range of cultures. We are a caring and kind community who aim to promote an environment where everyone feels happy, safe and secure. Discrimination is not tolerated and is dealt with quickly. Every member of the school community is encouraged to behave in a considerate way towards others.
We treat all children equally and aim to help children to grow in a safe and secure environment, and to become positive, responsible and increasingly independent members of the school community.
Our PHSE curriculum equips our children to negotiate, share and co-operate and our RE curriculum teaches the children about the beliefs of many religions.
